Creeps all the way down.

From the [*Washington Post* earlier this year](https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2026/08/02/how-police-officers-used-vast-network-cameras-spy-their-exes/?ref=it-can-only-get-stranger.ghost.io):

> "Authorities have charged or accused at least 50 law-enforcement officers of using license-plate readers for unauthorized purposes, including to stalk women without their knowledge or consent, a Post analysis of police and court records found.

> "In 26 of these cases, police investigators and prosecutors said the officers used the technology to spy on their wives, their girlfriends, their exes, their exes’ new partners or women they wanted to meet. In other cases, police or prosecutors have not specified the alleged surveillance targets. Flock’s system was used in 46 of the cases analyzed by The Post, while the other cases involved competing products.

> \[...\]

> "A leader of the surging industry for license-plate readers, the company told The Post that its more than 120,000 shoebox-size cameras now scan the roads of more than 6,000 communities and record 20 billion plate scans a month."

From [Katherine Hamilton at *Forbes* in 2023](https://www.forbes.com/sites/katherinehamilton/2023/04/06/tesla-employees-reportedly-shared-photos-of-crashes-owners-kids-and-road-rage-taken-by-car-cameras/?ref=it-can-only-get-stranger.ghost.io):

> "Between 2019 and 2022, recordings of Tesla owners were privately shared via the company’s internal messaging system, catching customers naked, showing their kids and sometimes revealing their locations, nine ex-employees told Reuters. Some of the images were reportedly turned into memes featuring customers’ dogs and funny road signs, while others depicted car crashes and road-rage incidents, including one video of a Tesla crashing into a child riding a bike—but many were distributed to scores of employees."

From [Alexi Mostrous at *Tortise* in 2024](https://www.tortoisemedia.com/2024/10/08/elon-musk-has-a-thing-for-private-eyes?ref=it-can-only-get-stranger.ghost.io):

> “\[Elon\] Musk’s team allegedly hired a private investigation firm on Australia’s Gold Coast to place Amber Heard, Musk’s then partner, under surveillance while she was filming Aquaman in 2017\. Musk declined comment on this and other enquiries. It is understood that he denies any wrongdoing.”

From [Ben Jordan at *WTMJ-TV* in May](https://www.tmj4.com/news/milwaukee-county/former-milwaukee-county-administrator-accused-of-secretly-recording-sexual-partner?ref=it-can-only-get-stranger.ghost.io):

> "A former Milwaukee County administrator pleaded not guilty Wednesday to three misdemeanor charges, including invasion of privacy, after prosecutors say he secretly recorded a sexual partner multiple times without her consent \[...\] Prosecutors say he used a cell phone and Meta smart glasses to record his ex-partner without her consent. \[...\] Nearly 8 months after the two stopped seeing each other, court records show the victim was informed there were more videos, including one taken from Landon's smart glasses. He told investigators it was an accident because he did not know how to work his Meta glasses."

From [Maggie Harrison Dupré at *Fururism* in August](https://futurism.com/artificial-intelligence/teen-boys-meta-glasses-harass-bully-girls-school?ref=it-can-only-get-stranger.ghost.io):

> "A *Futurism* review found large numbers of videos recorded at middle and high schools using smart glasses — almost always Meta’s AI Glasses, designed in partnership with the eyewear titan Ray-Ban — and shared to social media platforms TikTok and Instagram. Recordings take place in school hallways, cafeterias, and classrooms, and feature interactions with other students as well as with staff and faculty. Much of the behavior on display is plainly harassment and bullying, often filmed without the subjects’ knowledge or consent and uploaded online to humiliate them further. Strikingly, every single one of the many smart glasses videos we found were captured by teen boys — and their bad behavior was overwhelmingly directed at girls."

From [Julia Sonenshein at *The New Republic* in 2024](https://newrepublic.com/article/178268/surveillance-changing-intimate-relationships?ref=it-can-only-get-stranger.ghost.io):

> Defeatism about all of this surveillance seems to be spreading: While most Americans are worried about the rate of state and commercial surveillance, 73 percent and 79 percent believe they have little to no control over what commercial or government interests, respectively, do with their data, a 2023 Pew study found.
